CVE-2024-48881

Local denial of service via bcache NULL dereference

Published Jan 11, 2025 · Updated May 23, 2026

NULL pointer dereference in affected Linux kernel bcache versions allows local users to crash the kernel during cache-set registration. cache_set_flush() checks c->root only with IS_ERR() after an earlier registration failure can leave it NULL, then adds c->root->list to btree_cache. Low-privileged local access and a failing bcache registration path are required; impact is limited to a kernel crash and service interruption.
