SYSTEM code execution via MSI removal race
Published Oct 31, 2024 · Updated Nov 1, 2024
Local privilege escalation in Mobatek MobaXterm 24.2 allows local users to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges through MSI removal. The installer can be forced to hang its elevated conhost.exe while removing locked files, after which legacy console mode launches cmd.exe as NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. Local access and the installed 24.2 MSI package are required; successful exploitation grants full command execution at the Windows SYSTEM level.
