Disputed broker crash via wildcard-heavy CONNECT packet

Published Dec 3, 2024 · Updated Feb 21, 2025

Disputed denial-of-service claim in Aedes 0.51.2 alleges remote attackers can crash an MQTT broker with a crafted CONNECT packet. The reported packet places numerous MQTT wildcard characters in CONNECT fields and alleges that parsing beyond the configured wildcard limit collapses the broker. Aedes states that lib/utils.js validateTopic blocks the packet, so an unauthenticated network connection does not reach a service-interrupting state.
