CVE-2024-47829Network attack vector

Dependency overwrite via MD5 path collision

Published Apr 23, 2025 · Updated Apr 23, 2025

Weak hashing in pnpm before 10.0.0 allows remote attackers to overwrite indirect dependencies through crafted package paths. The depPathToFilename function truncates long normalized dependency paths and appends an MD5-derived suffix, so distinct packages can resolve to the same store directory. Exploitation requires attacker-chosen package identifiers with a shared retained prefix and colliding hashes; the dependency installed later determines the version used.
