CVE-2024-47824Network attack vector

Message-key theft via unverified device sharing

Published Oct 15, 2024 · Updated Nov 21, 2024

Information exposure in Matrix.org's matrix-react-sdk 3.18.0 through 3.101.0 allows remote attackers to steal historical room message keys. Invite flows call MatrixClient.sendSharedHistoryKeys, which applies new-key sharing rules to historical keys and sends them to unverified users and devices. Exploitation requires a user of the legacy encryption stack to invite another user to an encrypted room; Rust crypto mode is unaffected.
