Kernel disclosure or crash via empty NILFS2 root
Published Oct 21, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026
Out-of-bounds read in the Linux kernel NILFS2 implementation allows local users to disclose kernel data or crash the system. nilfs_btree_check_delete() retrieves the maximum key outside the block buffer when a device supplies a B-tree root node with no entries. Exploitation requires a device containing this malformed root state, which mkfs.nilfs2 and NILFS2 do not normally create.
