Local kernel crash via NULL framebuffer dereference
Published Oct 21, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026
NULL pointer dereference in Linux 5.19 and later affected branches allows local users to crash the kernel through the MediaTek VP8 decoder. In vdec_vp8_slice_decode(), code applies container_of to a framebuffer pointer without first rejecting NULL, then dereferences the invalid result. A local low-privilege user must reach the stateless VP8 decode path; the documented consequence is a kernel crash, not data access or code execution.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
