CVE-2024-47699

Local system crash via malformed NILFS2 b-tree

Published Oct 21, 2024 · Updated May 12, 2026

NULL pointer dereference in affected Linux NILFS2 releases allows local users to crash the system via a corrupted filesystem image. When an empty root node has a level greater than one, nilfs_btree_do_lookup leaves path buffer heads NULL and nilfs_btree_get_nonroot_node dereferences one during insertion. Exploitation requires local access and a corrupted NILFS2 image; the documented consequence is a kernel crash.
