Stored XSS via unescaped avatar names
Published Oct 5, 2024 · Updated Apr 28, 2026
Stored XSS in Paul Bearne Author Avatars List/Block 2.1.21 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to execute scripts via avatar names. Avatar-list output places a stored avatar name into generated page markup without the late escaping added in 2.1.22, allowing attacker-controlled markup to reach a visitor's browser. Low-privileged access is required to store the name, and another user must view the affected avatar list or block; scripts then run in that viewer's browser context.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
