.netrc credential disclosure via netloc host confusion

Published Jun 9, 2025 · Updated Jun 9, 2025

Credential disclosure in Python Software Foundation Requests before 2.32.4 allows remote attackers to obtain .netrc credentials via crafted URLs. The get_netrc_auth function splits the parsed URL's netloc at its first colon, so a userinfo prefix naming a trusted host selects that host's .netrc entry while the request goes to the attacker-controlled host. Exploitation requires a consuming application to request the supplied URL while .netrc use is enabled and a matching credential entry exists.
