CVE-2024-4693

Guest-triggered host process crash via reused irqfd

Published May 10, 2024 · Updated Nov 8, 2025

Denial of service in QEMU Virtio PCI bindings in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 allows guest OS users to crash the host QEMU process. The virtio-pci path releases and then reuses vector 0's irqfd during vhost_net_stop(), leading to a null or uninitialized pointer dereference. Guest OS access and the affected virtio device state are required; exploitation terminates the QEMU process without compromising host data.
