Extraction-process crash via stale cleanup pointers
Published Dec 10, 2024 · Updated Dec 11, 2024
Denial of service in Artifex Software MuPDF 1.24.9 allows local users to crash mutool extract by processing a crafted PDF file. In source/tools/pdfextract.c, saveimage() and extractobject() can retain stale pointer values across fz_try exception handling because required fz_var declarations are omitted, causing cleanup to drop invalid objects. Processing attacker-supplied PDF content is required, and the reported consequence is termination of the extraction process without documented confidentiality or integrity impact.
