CVE-2024-45818

Host lockup via repeated VGA lock acquisition

Published Dec 19, 2024 · Updated Dec 31, 2024

Improper locking in Xen 4.6 through 4.19 allows guest OS users to lock up an x86 host through standard VGA memory accesses. The x86 HVM emulator leaves the VGA lock held after the first of two qualifying memory accesses, then attempts to acquire the same lock during the second access and deadlocks. Only x86 hosts running HVM guests are exposed, and control of an HVM guest kernel is required to trigger the host-wide hang.
