CVE-2024-45402Network attack vector

Process abort via dangling X25519 secret pointer

Published Oct 11, 2024 · Updated Oct 15, 2024

Double free in picotls before 9b88159ce763d680e4a13b6e8f3171ae923a535d allows remote attackers to crash TLS processes. On X25519 derivation failure, crypto bindings free the shared-secret buffer but leave its address in the output, so caller cleanup frees it again. Unauthenticated network access and a spoofed handshake are sufficient; process abort is the normal outcome, while code execution requires backend and allocator behavior that produces use-after-free.
