CVE-2024-45026

Data corruption via imprecise ESE error classification

Published Sep 11, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Data corruption in the s390 DASD driver in affected Linux releases allows local users to corrupt ESE-backed storage during file I/O. dasd_ese_needs_format treats generic incorrect-length and file-protected status as evidence of an unformatted track instead of requiring invalid-track-format status in transport mode. Reachability requires an s390 system using an ESE DASD volume and a storage-side error such as a warmstart; misdirected formatting or incomplete reads can destroy file data or metadata.
