CVE-2024-45005

Guest startup failure via uninitialized GISA origin

Published Sep 4, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

Use of an uninitialized resource in Linux KVM for s390 allows local users to prevent a new virtual machine guest from starting. When GISA is disabled, kvm_s390_get_gisa_desc() passes an uninitialized GISA origin to virt_to_phys() and writes an invalid designation into the SIE control block. The issue requires an s390 host running an affected kernel beginning with 6.2 and GISA disabled; guest startup then raises an unhandled validity intercept and host-kernel warning.
