CVE-2024-44966

Local kernel memory corruption via FLAT loader overwrite

Published Sep 4, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Out-of-bounds write in the Linux kernel allows local users to corrupt kernel memory by executing a crafted RISC-V FLAT binary. In fs/binfmt_flat.c, the loader initializes a shared-library pointer slot even when the selected format reserves no space for that array, overwriting sizeof(long) bytes before the data segment. Reachability requires local file execution on a RISC-V kernel built with CONFIG_BINFMT_FLAT_NO_DATA_START_OFFSET; the overwrite can interrupt the affected system.
