System hang via preemption-fence callback deadlock
Published Sep 4, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026
Improper locking in Linux kernel 6.8 through 6.10.4 allows local users to hang the system through Xe preemption-fence processing. preempt_fence_work_func() performs callback work outside the fence critical section on a single ordered workqueue, so blocking while acquiring a sensitive lock prevents other published fences from signaling. Low-privileged local access and an active Xe DRM path are required; the reported consequence is system availability loss, not data disclosure or modification.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
