CVE-2024-44950

Serial corruption and hang via unlocked register access

Published Sep 4, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Race condition in the Linux kernel sc16is7xx serial driver allows local users to corrupt serial data or hang the port. The unlocked special-register window lets an interrupt handler read address 0x00 as the RHR FIFO while that address maps to the DLL register. Access to a ttySC device is required; racing termios changes with local I/O can corrupt the baud divisor, inject bytes, and leave the IRQ loop stuck.
