Local privilege escalation via unquoted service path
Published May 3, 2024 · Updated Aug 1, 2024
Unquoted service path handling in SugarSync before 4.1.3 for Windows allows local users to execute code with elevated privileges. The SugarSync Service registers its space-containing executable path without quotation marks, so Windows can select an attacker-planted executable earlier in the search path. A low-privileged user needs write access to a searched directory, and code runs as LocalSystem when the service restarts or Windows reboots.
