Protected-file overwrite via fixed temporary-file symlink
Published Oct 28, 2024 · Updated Apr 2, 2026
Incorrect authorization in Apple macOS PackageKit allows local users to overwrite protected files on affected Ventura, Sonoma, and Sequoia releases. The CanonLaser_FCore.pkg installer script writes process output as root to the fixed, user-controlled /tmp/jp.co.canon.maccups_installer_ps_kill path and follows a preplaced symbolic link. A local low-privileged user must prepare the link and trigger the package; affected releases are Ventura before 13.7.1, Sonoma before 14.7.1, and Sequoia before 15.1, and the overwrite can interrupt XProtect without a full SIP bypass.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
