Unauthorized local network access via extension UDP relay
Published Sep 16, 2024 · Updated Apr 2, 2026
Improper privilege management in NetworkExtension in Apple iOS and iPadOS before 18 allows attackers to access the local network. DeviceDiscoveryExtension runs in a privileged system sandbox and can relay discovered LAN data to an unpermitted host app through an open UDP socket. An installed app must invoke the media receiver picker, after which it can scan services or interact with local devices during the extension session.
