CPU hang via tracing-map element-counter overflow
Published Aug 26, 2024 · Updated May 12, 2026
Integer overflow in Linux kernel tracing_map handling since 4.7 allows local users to hang a CPU through crafted tracing-map insertions. get_free_elt() increments next_elt until it wraps, permitting a full tracing_map; __tracing_map_insert() then loops forever with preemption disabled. Local low-privileged access and a trace-map consumer able to drive repeated element creation are required, and the documented consequence is an availability-only CPU hang.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
