Kernel warning via unhandled 2x996 RU allocation
Published Aug 21, 2024 · Updated May 12, 2026
Improper input validation in Linux cfg80211 allows local users to trigger a kernel warning through a 2x996 HE RU allocation. cfg80211_calculate_bitrate_he() rejects the defined NL80211_RATE_INFO_HE_RU_ALLOC_2x996 value instead of calculating it like 160 MHz bandwidth. Exploitation requires low-privileged local access and an HE wireless rate report using that allocation; the warning affects Linux and the Siemens GNU/Linux subsystem.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
