CVE-2024-43802Public exploit

Editor crash via unchecked typeahead offset advance

Published Aug 26, 2024 · Updated Nov 3, 2025

Heap-based buffer overflow in Vim before 9.1.0697 allows local users to crash the editor through crafted typeahead state. During a typeahead-buffer flush, the offset-advance logic can move tb_off past the valid typebuf region, after which ins_typebuf() performs an out-of-bounds memmove. Triggering requires several long mappings and an error condition that flushes typeahead; the documented result is a Vim process crash.
