CVE-2024-43782Network attack vector

Script execution via unvalidated translation strings

Published Aug 23, 2024 · Updated Aug 27, 2024

Translation injection in Open edX openedx-translations before b244434 allows remote authenticated users to execute scripts through crafted strings. The validate_translation_file function relied on msgfmt checks but omitted i18n.validate.check_messages, allowing malformed or script-bearing PO entries to pass validation. Exploitation requires low privileges and user interaction, and the resulting script can expose or alter browser-accessible data without interrupting service.
