Code execution via concealed HTA file extension
Published Sep 10, 2024 · Updated Aug 10, 2026
UI spoofing in Microsoft Windows MSHTML allows remote attackers to disguise a malicious HTA file as a PDF through a crafted filename. Internet Explorer’s download prompt truncates a name padded with encoded Braille blanks, pushing the true .hta extension out of view. A user must open the disguised file; its script then executes with the user’s privileges and can install malware.
