CVE-2024-43378

Local LUKS key disclosure via incorrect keyfile creation

Published Aug 15, 2024 · Updated Sep 3, 2024

Plaintext key storage in calamares-nixos-extensions before 0.3.17 allows local users to obtain LUKS disk-encryption keys. The graphical installer's keyfile-generation logic creates /crypto_keyfile.bin or embeds it in the initrd when manual legacy-BIOS partitioning leaves / or /boot unencrypted. Exposure requires mixed encrypted and unencrypted partitions; UEFI, nixos-install, and default automatic partitioning are unaffected, and the key permits reading or altering data encrypted with it.
