CVE-2024-43167Public exploit

Process crash via unchecked forward-entry name

Published Aug 8, 2024 · Updated Nov 3, 2025

NULL pointer dereference in NLnet Labs Unbound 1.20.0 and earlier allows local users to crash an API-consuming process via call ordering. After ub_ctx_resolvconf creates a forward entry with a null name, ub_ctx_set_fwd passes that name to strcmp without first checking it. Reachability requires control of the local client's configuration or API sequence, and NLnet Labs disputes that this behavior crosses Unbound's security boundary.
