Packet replay via shared message cache
Published Sep 12, 2024 · Updated Sep 12, 2024
Replay protection failure in Espressif Systems ESP-NOW 2.5.1 and earlier allows physically proximate attackers to re-inject captured packets. In espnow_recv_cb, one g_msg_magic_cache records plaintext and ciphertext message identifiers, so plaintext traffic can evict ciphertext entries. An attacker within Wi-Fi range can fill that shared cache and replay an older ciphertext packet, altering the data accepted by a receiving device.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
