Kernel panic via mishandled read-only conversion error
Published Aug 17, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Error handling in Linux kernel f2fs allows local users to trigger a kernel panic during inline-inode writeback on affected releases. f2fs_convert_inline_inode returns success instead of EROFS when the underlying device is read-only, allowing writeback to continue with an invalid conversion state. Exploitation requires local access to a mounted f2fs filesystem and a read-only device condition; the bounded consequence is a host crash.
