CVE-2024-42273

Local kernel crash via invalid compressed-block assignment

Published Aug 17, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Out-of-bounds access in f2fs on affected Linux kernel versions allows local users to crash the kernel through compressed-file writeback. During writeback, set_cluster_dirty marks the page for garbage collection, but do_write_page assigns CURSEG_ALL_DATA_ATGC when blkaddr is COMPR_ADDR, causing segment lookup to index outside its arrays. Exploitation requires local write access to a compression-enabled f2fs mount; the resulting BUG_ON or kernel oops can hang the filesystem or system.
