Local system crash via premature IPv6 netfilter exposure
Published Aug 17, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026
NULL pointer dereference in the Linux kernel allows local users to crash the system through initialization of IPv6 iptables NAT. ip6table_nat_table_init reads its per-network pointer after its user-space template is registered but before register_pernet_subsys allocates the entry. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access and the initialization timing window; the reported consequence is system availability loss.
