Device-register corruption via unlocked interrupt synchronization
Published Aug 8, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Improper locking in the Linux kernel PCA953x GPIO driver allows local users to corrupt device register writes during a race. pca953x_irq_bus_sync_unlock() updates the interrupt latch and mask without holding i2c_lock, so a concurrent request can redirect latch data into the output register. Reaching the race requires local low-privileged access and a compatible GPIO device; observed failures occurred about once per thousand reboots on i.MX8MP.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
