CVE-2024-42111

Kernel crash via skipped Btrfs inheritance checks

Published Jul 30, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Out-of-bounds read in Linux 6.8.10 through 6.9 allows local users to crash the kernel via a crafted Btrfs snapshot request. When qgroups are disabled, btrfs_qgroup_check_inherit skips size and copy-count validation, so transaction commit consumes an invalid btrfs_qgroup_inherit structure after qgroups are re-enabled. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access, a Btrfs filesystem, a crafted snapshot ioctl, and a concurrent qgroup state transition; the observed result is a kernel service interruption.
