CVE-2024-42101

System crash via unchecked mode duplication failure

Published Jul 30, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

NULL pointer dereference in affected Linux kernels allows local users to crash the system through Nouveau display mode enumeration. nouveau_connector_get_modes assigns a failed drm_mode_duplicate result to mode and dereferences it without first checking for NULL. Exploitation requires local low-privilege access, the Nouveau display path, and a mode-duplication allocation failure; the documented consequence is availability loss.
