CVE-2024-42050

SYSTEM escalation via oplocked registry-file replacement

Published Jul 28, 2024 · Updated Aug 2, 2024

Local privilege escalation in Splashtop Streamer for Windows before 3.7.0.0 allows local users to execute code as SYSTEM. The MSI repair loads CredProvider_Inst.reg from a user-writable temporary directory, allowing its contents to be replaced after an oplock triggers. The original installer must remain available or be restorable, and the attacker must win the race before arbitrary registry values execute a chosen binary as SYSTEM.
