Cross-site scripting via raw XHTML misclassification

Published Jun 12, 2024 · Updated Aug 29, 2024

Cross-site scripting in affected GitLab releases allows remote authenticated users to run script through a crafted raw XHTML file. The raw-file safety check misclassifies XHTML when altered DOCTYPE formatting bypasses its unsafe-content test, so GitLab returns the file inline and iOS WebKit content-sniffs it as HTML. A low-privileged user must host the content and persuade an iOS user to open the raw link; self-managed instances permit script execution, while GitLab.com is limited by CSP to HTML and form injection.
