Code execution via costmap shutdown use-after-free
Published Dec 6, 2024 · Updated Dec 11, 2024
Use-after-free in Open Robotics ROS 2 Navigation2 Humble allows remote authenticated users to execute code through a crafted costmap request. ClearCostmapService leaves clear_entire_service_ active while cleanup frees layered_costmap_ and its inflation-layer plugin, so an in-flight callback dereferences freed memory. Exploitation requires a clear-costmap callback to overlap node cleanup; the published reproduction demonstrates a heap invalid read and process abort, while the CVE record identifies arbitrary code execution as the impact.
