Controller crash via shutdown-time null dereference
Published Dec 6, 2024 · Updated Dec 11, 2024
A shutdown race in ROS 2 Navigation2 Humble allows remote attackers to crash nav2_controller through a path-following action. The controller action thread calls costmap_ros_->getRobotPose() after the independently managed costmap lifecycle node has begun shutdown, causing a null-pointer read. Exploitation requires a FollowPath request to overlap costmap shutdown; the demonstrated consequence is a controller-process crash, not arbitrary code execution.
