Router compromise via get_merge_mac stack overflow
Published Jul 19, 2024 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Stack-based buffer overflow in Linksys WRT54G 4.21.5 allows adjacent-network attackers to compromise the router without authentication. The get_merge_mac function writes past a stack buffer, but the published record and its broken research reference do not disclose the triggering input. An attacker must share a reachable local-network segment, but needs neither an account nor user action to trigger the overflow and compromise the router.
