Kernel crash via stale netfs folio mapping
Published Jul 29, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026
NULL pointer dereference in Linux kernel 6.8 allows local users to crash the kernel through concurrent direct and memory-mapped writes. After locking a folio, netfs_page_mkwrite dereferences its mapping without rechecking whether direct-I/O invalidation cleared it. Triggering requires local low-privileged access and a race between direct-I/O completion and writes to the same memory-mapped folio.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
