CVE-2024-41036Network attack vector

Remote system hang via ks8851 spinlock deadlock

Published Jul 29, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Deadlock in the Linux kernel ks8851 SPI Ethernet driver allows remote attackers to hang affected systems through sustained reply traffic. ks8851_start_xmit_spi holds statelock while waking the TX queue, allowing synchronous softirq transmit work to reacquire the same spinlock. Reachability requires an SMP-enabled system using the ks8851 SPI variant and an active interface; a successful trigger can lock a CPU, disable networking, or hang the system until reset.
