CVE-2024-40971

Data corruption via inline-encryption remount race

Published Jul 12, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Race condition in F2FS in Linux 3.8 and later allows local users to corrupt data by creating or opening files during a remount. f2fs_remount calls default_options, which temporarily clears SB_INLINECRYPT before parse_options restores it, so concurrent file operations can bypass inline encryption. The race requires an F2FS remount concurrent with file creation or opening; corruption is reported when wrappedkey_v0 is enabled.
