CVE-2024-40964

System crash via zero-index component dereference

Published Jul 12, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

NULL pointer dereference in Linux kernel 6.6 to 6.6.35 and 6.7 to 6.9.6 allows local users to crash the system via ALSA HDA unbinding. cs35l41_hda_unbind() clears the indexed hda_component entry, then dereferences the codec pointer in array element zero, which is NULL when the departing device has index zero. Local low-privilege access and a CS35L41-backed HDA device are required; 6.10-rc1 through 6.10-rc4 are also affected, and the bounded consequence is a system crash.
