CVE-2024-40962

Kernel crash via missing zoned-write checksums

Published Jul 12, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

NULL pointer dereference in the btrfs zoned-write path in Linux allows local users to crash the kernel via a NOCOW data write. The completion path leaves the ordered extent checksum list empty because dummy checksums are attached only to zone-append writes, not NOCOW writes on conventional zones. Reaching the flaw requires a btrfs filesystem using zoned emulation on conventional zones and a NOCOW or NODATASUM write; the demonstrated consequence is a kernel crash.
