CVE-2024-40916

Display initialization hang via unsupported fallback mode

Published Jul 12, 2024 · Updated May 23, 2026

Improper input validation in Linux Exynos HDMI allows local users to stall display initialization after an EDID read failure. The Exynos HDMI get_modes path returns no mode when EDID retrieval fails, causing DRM core to synthesize a 1024x768 fallback that some Exynos4 HDMI variants cannot drive. Reachability requires affected Exynos HDMI hardware and local high-privileged access; the resulting PLL and VSYNC failures can hang display startup.
