Root-level system-file modification via insufficient APFS checks
Published Sep 16, 2024 · Updated Apr 2, 2026
Improper access control in Apple APFS in macOS before 15 and visionOS before 2 allows local users with root privileges to modify system files. Apple states only that APFS performed insufficient checks and has not disclosed the affected operation or input path. Exploitation requires a malicious local app already running as root, and the bounded result is modification of system-file contents.
