CVE-2024-40821

Sandbox bypass via incorrect extension restrictions

Published Jul 29, 2024 · Updated Apr 2, 2026

Improper permission preservation in Apple macOS allows local users to bypass sandbox restrictions through third-party app extensions. The Security component assigns third-party app extensions less restrictive sandbox permissions than intended; Apple has not disclosed the responsible code path. A third-party app extension must execute locally on an affected Mac, and Apple has not identified the resources or actions exposed by the missing restrictions.
