Conversation disclosure via unprotected cleartext storage
Published Jul 6, 2024 · Updated Nov 4, 2024
Cleartext storage in OpenAI ChatGPT for macOS before 2024-07-05 allows local users to read saved conversations through another app. The app writes conversation files under Library/Application Support/com.openai.chat in plaintext while operating outside the macOS sandbox. Any process running in the affected user account can read the chat history without a permission prompt, exposing conversation contents but not enabling modification or service interruption.
